JPG has no transparency, so a transparent background is saved as white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep it transparent.

Only documents whose rules allow a digitally produced plain background are listed. The photo opens in the photo tool, which crops and checks it.
Not offered for AU citizenship, AU passport, AU visa, Ochre Card NT, RWVP Tasmania, WWC Check VIC, WWC Check WA, Canada visa IRCC and others: their rules prohibit editing or replacing the background, so retake against a plain wall instead.
It uses the portrait model (MODNet), places you centred on a soft blue-grey square at 800 px with your head and shoulders filling 80% of the frame, and shows the preview inside a circle so you can see what people will actually see. Change the background colour with the picker or a swatch, choose Blur the original for a portrait-mode look, or keep it transparent for a PNG you will style elsewhere.
Getting a good result
Face a window, with the light falling evenly on your face. Avoid strong backlight.
Have someone take the photo from about two metres, slightly zoomed in, at eye level.
Plain backgrounds give the cleanest hair edge, but the model copes with most rooms.
Leave space around your head; the square framing does the cropping.
If a strand of hair or an earring is lost, paint it back with the Keep brush.
Colours that work in a circle
Light, slightly cool neutrals (soft grey, blue-grey) flatter most skin tones and read well on both light and dark app themes. Brand colours work for company accounts. Pure white can disappear against white app backgrounds; a very pale grey avoids that. Whatever you choose, use the same picture everywhere so people recognise you.
Sizes
Most platforms show profile pictures as small circles but store a larger square. An 800 × 800 px PNG is a safe upload almost everywhere. The free tier exports up to 1,000 px, so it covers this. For LinkedIn and CV headshots with framing tips, see the headshot tool.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a profile picture?
Most platforms accept a square; 800 × 800 px is safe for nearly all and is the preset size.
Will the circle crop cut off my head?
The preview shows the circle, so you can adjust the fill before downloading.
Can I blur the background instead of replacing it?
Yes, choose Blur the original.
PNG or JPG?
PNG if transparent; JPG is fine on a colour background.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model runs in your browser.
Can I use this for a passport photo?
Most passport rules prohibit replacing the background; use the photo maker for those documents.
