What your browser can do
These tools use WebCodecs, the browser's built-in access to hardware video encoders and decoders, so they are fast for short clips and need no download. They work best in current Chrome, Edge and Safari on a computer; Firefox supports them from version 130. Which codecs are available depends on the browser and device; each tool shows what this browser can encode.
| Browser | Reads | Writes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge (Windows, Mac) | MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV (H.264, VP9, AV1; HEVC with hardware support) | H.264, VP9, AV1, AAC, Opus |
| Safari (Mac, iPhone) | MP4, MOV, WebM (H.264, HEVC, VP9) | H.264, HEVC, VP9, AAC, Opus |
| Firefox 130+ | MP4, WebM, MKV (H.264, VP9, AV1) | H.264, VP9, AV1, Opus; AAC varies |
This table is a guide based on browser documentation at the time of writing; the tools check the actual support when they load. For long or 4K videos, a desktop app such as HandBrake is faster.
