Camera tips before you shoot
  • Someone else holds the phone about 1.5 m away at your head height. No selfies at arm's length.
  • Daylight from a window in front of you; no flash, no overhead-only light.
  • Plain light wall, half a metre behind you, no shadow on it.
  • Shoulders in frame, space above the head; the tool crops.
  • Use the original file, not a screenshot or a messaging-app copy.

Can I take it myself? Yes

Yes. UQ expects you to supply the photo. Take it against a plain white or light wall with someone else holding the camera, then upload it as UQ's page directs.

Why UQ student card photos get rejected

      1. Photo too dark or backlit. Face a window; avoid bright light behind you.
      2. Not just head and shoulders. The tool crops to head and shoulders.
      3. Sunglasses or a cap. Remove them; clear glasses are usually fine.
      4. Busy background. Use a plain light wall.
      5. Blurred. Hold still, tap to focus, use the rear camera.

      UQ student card photo FAQ

What photo does UQ need for a student card?

A photo that clearly shows your face and upper shoulders, on a plain white or light background, face straight on, in JPG, PNG or PDF, per UQ's page as reported on 2026-10-29.

Does UQ specify a pixel size?

Not that we could find. The 600×800 export is a safe size.

      Can I upload a PNG?

Yes. UQ lists JPG, PNG or PDF as accepted formats.

      Can I smile?

UQ asks for a straight-on face; a neutral or slight smile is usually fine. Follow UQ's instructions.

Is this checked against UQ's rules?

The tool gives framing tips based on UQ's published guidance; it does not issue a pass or fail.

Where do I collect the card?

See UQ's student ID card page.
