- Generic guidance; no official specification. University-specific pages exist only where the university publishes photo guidance.
- Universities checked on 2026-10-29 without published upload specifications: Curtin, Murdoch, ECU, UniMelb, Monash (paper form for off-campus cards), UNSW and USyd. They have no dedicated page until their rules can be confirmed.
Can I take it myself? Yes
Yes. Universities expect you to take the photo yourself and upload it through their portal. A photo someone else takes against a plain wall in daylight is ideal. If your university publishes a specific size, follow it; the 600×800 export here is larger than any size we found and portals resize it.
Why Student card photos get rejected
- Photo too dark or backlit. Face a window; avoid bright light behind you.
- Not just head and shoulders. The tool crops to head and shoulders.
- Sunglasses or a cap. Remove them; clear glasses are usually fine.
- Busy background. Use a plain light wall.
- Blurred. Hold still, tap to focus, use the rear camera.
Student card photo FAQ
What size photo do universities want for student cards?
It varies. Many accept any reasonably sized JPEG; some publish a size (for example, Wollongong asks for 190×253 px). Check your own university's page.
Can I smile?
Usually yes; student cards are not passports. Follow your university's instructions.
Can I wear glasses?
Clear glasses are usually fine. Remove sunglasses.
Can I use my passport photo?
Often yes, if it is recent and the portal accepts the file.
Is this checked against official rules?
No. The generic preset gives framing tips only; your university's rules take priority.
Which universities have their own page here?
UQ and UWA, where the university publishes photo guidance. Others are listed in the hub as not yet published.
