Japanese visa application forms take one photo 45 mm by 45 mm, a square that is larger than most visa photos, taken within six months on a plain white or light background with the face centred and a neutral expression. Several consulates accept a 35×45 mm photo instead, and the Japan eVISA portal, available to some nationalities, takes a digital upload. Check which your embassy wants before printing.

- The MOFA visa FAQ could not be fetched. Japanese embassies specify a 45×45 mm photo taken within six months on a plain white or light background; some consulates accept 35×45 mm. Head band is an ICAO-style estimate. Confirm with the embassy or consulate you apply through.
- Confirm 45×45 mm versus 35×45 mm with the embassy you are using.
Can I take it myself? Yes
Yes. Japanese embassies and consulates publish the requirement and accept any photo meeting it; there is no photographer rule. The square 45×45 mm format is the detail people miss, because booths and shops default to 35×45 mm. The tool crops to the square; if your consulate takes 35×45 mm, use the Japanese passport preset instead.
How to take the photo
- Use a plain white or light wall, stand half a metre from it and face a window for even light with no shadow behind you.
- Someone else takes the photo from 1.5 metres at eye level with shoulders in frame; the tool crops to a 45 mm square with the face centred.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, hair off the face. Glasses only without glare; no hats except religious coverings showing the whole face.
- Print one 45×45 mm copy on photo paper from our sheet and attach it to the form as instructed by the embassy.
- If applying through the eVISA portal, upload the square JPEG instead.
Why Japan visa photos get rejected
- Wrong size (35×45 mm where 45×45 mm is required). Use this square preset.
- Face not centred or too small. The checker reports head height and centring on the 45 mm square.
- Shadow behind the head. Light from the front and step away from the wall.
- Background not plain. Use a plain light wall.
- Photo older than six months. Take a new one.
- Glare on glasses. Remove them.
Infants and children
Each child needs their own form and photo. Lay the baby on a plain light sheet and shoot from above, face fully visible, nothing in the mouth and no hands in frame. Consulates are lenient about infant expression.
