LinkedIn profile photo size
Third-party guides quote LinkedIn's profile photo as 400 × 400 px recommended, square, up to 8 MB; we could not read LinkedIn's own help page to confirm. Upload larger than 400 px (800 × 800 here) and LinkedIn keeps it sharp on high-resolution screens. This preset resizes the long edge to 800 px and compresses to well under the limit.
Cropping
LinkedIn shows profile photos as circles. Crop square, with your face centred and filling about 60% of the frame, so the circle does not cut your chin or hair. The resize and crop tool's 1:1 option does this, or use the LinkedIn headshot tool for framing guidance and a circle preview.
Background photo
LinkedIn's background (banner) image is widely quoted at 1584 × 396 px. The social resizer makes it with your profile photo's overlap area marked.
What makes a good LinkedIn photo
- Recent and recognisable: it should look like you at an interview.
- Plain, uncluttered background; a soft blur works.
- Good light on your face, from a window in front of you.
- Natural expression; a smile is usual on LinkedIn.
Remove the background or replace it with a neutral colour using the profile picture tool.
Uploading to LinkedIn, step by step
- Open your LinkedIn profile and click your profile photo.
- Choose to change the photo and upload the compressed file.
- Use LinkedIn's crop and zoom to centre your face in the circle.
- Set who can see the photo in its visibility setting.
Checklist before you upload
- Head and shoulders, face centred.
- Square crop, 800 px or larger.
- Neutral or softly blurred background.
- Matches how you look in person.
If LinkedIn rejects the file
- Too large: lower the target a little (some systems count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes) and run it again.
- Wrong type: make sure it is a .jpg; some systems refuse WebP or HEIC.
- Too small or blurry: start from the original photo rather than a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app, which are already compressed.
- Sideways: the photo relied on an orientation tag; the tool applies orientation, so re-run it from the original if needed.
The limits used by this preset are the commonly quoted ones and are flagged for checking in the sources below; if LinkedIn states a different figure on its upload screen, change the target above the button to match.
Why your photo matters on LinkedIn
Your profile photo appears next to every post, comment, message and search result. A clear, friendly, professional photo makes people more likely to accept a connection or read a message, and helps people who have met you recognise you. Update it when your appearance changes noticeably.
Light and background
Face a window with soft daylight; avoid overhead lights that shadow your eyes. A plain wall, an office or outdoor greenery all work as backgrounds if they are not busy. If you want a clean colour behind you, the profile picture tool removes the background in your browser.
Same photo everywhere
Using the same profile photo on LinkedIn, your email signature, work chat and other professional sites makes you easy to recognise. Make one good square master here, then reuse it.
Private by design
The image never leaves your device. It is decoded in your browser, processed in a background worker by open-source codecs compiled to WebAssembly (MozJPEG, libwebp, libavif and OxiPNG, via the jsquash project, plus pica for resizing) and handed back as a download. There is no upload, no account and no server copy to delete. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows the page's own files and the codec files loading, and nothing carrying your image. After the first visit the tools work offline.
