UPSC exam application photo photo requirements

The UPSC online application, through One Time Registration (OTR) and each exam's form, asks for a recent photograph uploaded as a JPG within fixed pixel and kilobyte limits. The face should take up about three-quarters of the image, on a white background. UPSC also asks candidates to bring matching printed copies to the exam. The exact limits are in each examination notice, which we could not read when this page was written. The values here are the widely reported ones and are flagged for you to confirm.

  • upsconline.gov.in now points new registrations to upsconline.nic.in; the photo specification is in each examination notice and was not read on 2026-10-29. Values used here are the widely reported ones: square JPG between 350×350 and 1000×1000 px, 20–300 KB, face about three-quarters of the photo, recent (within about 10 days of the notice in recent notices), white background. Third-party sources conflict; confirm in the notice.

Can I take it myself? Yes

Yes. UPSC expects candidates to supply the photo. It must be recent, and recent notices require it to be taken close to the date of the notice, so take a fresh one rather than reusing an old passport photo. Keep the same photo for every stage, and keep prints, because a mismatch can cause trouble at the exam centre.

How to take the photo

  1. Read the photo section of your examination notice and note the pixel, KB and date rules.
  2. Take a new photo against a plain white wall, face straight on, neutral expression, ears visible, no cap or dark glasses.
  3. Load it here; the tool crops a square with the face filling most of the frame.
  4. Export the 600×600 JPG, which is compressed to land between 20 and 300 KB.
  5. Upload it in OTR or the exam form, and print several identical copies to carry to the exam.

Why UPSC photo photos get rejected

  1. Outside the pixel or KB limits. Use the 600×600 preset (20–300 KB); adjust if your notice states different limits.
  2. Face too small. The face should fill about three-quarters of the image; increase head size.
  3. Old photo. Take a fresh photo as the notice requires.
  4. Cap, dark glasses or face covered. Remove them; keep the face fully visible.
  5. Blurred or dark. Use daylight and the rear camera.
  6. Photo differs from the one at the exam. Bring prints of the same photo you uploaded.

Infants and children

Not applicable: UPSC candidates are adults. For a child's Indian passport photo, use the Indian passport page with infant mode.
