Vietnam e-visa photo photo requirements

Vietnam's national e-visa portal asks for two uploads: a portrait photo in 4×6 cm proportions, JPG, straight-on with a white background and no glasses glare, and a scan of your passport data page. The portrait is printed onto the e-visa document itself, so a tightly framed, clear face matters more than for most visas. No printed photo is needed and there is no appointment.

  • The e-visa portal's landing page has no photo specification; the application form states a 4×6 cm portrait photo in JPG with a file-size cap (commonly quoted as 2 MB). Head band and exact limits were not confirmed.

Can I take it myself? Yes

Yes. The portal simply needs a compliant file and performs a light automatic check for a single face. The 4×6 cm (2:3) frame is taller than a passport photo, so a square or 35×45 crop looks wrong and is a common reason for the application being returned for correction. Vietnamese guidance allows a plain white background by any means, so a white replacement is offered as an opt-in.

How to take the photo

  1. Use a white wall or sheet, stand half a metre from it and light from the front so there is no shadow behind the head.
  2. Someone else takes the photo from 1.5 metres at eye level with head and shoulders in frame; the tool crops to the 2:3 portrait.
  3. Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera. Hair off the face.
  4. Glasses are tolerated without glare, but removing them avoids a query. No hats or head coverings except religious ones showing the full face.
  5. Export with the e-visa preset and upload it as the portrait; the passport page scan is a separate upload.

Why Vietnam e-visa photos get rejected

  1. Wrong proportions (passport-style crop). The portal wants 4×6 cm. Use this preset.
  2. Background not white. Retake against white, or use the permitted white replacement for this document.
  3. Glare on glasses or sunglasses. Remove them.
  4. Shadow behind the head. Light from the front and step away from the wall.
  5. File too large or not JPG. The export here is a JPG under the cap.
  6. Face too small in the frame. Head 32–40 mm on the 60 mm frame; adjust with the head-size control.

Infants and children

A child travelling on their own passport needs their own e-visa and portrait. Lay the baby on a white sheet and photograph from above with the face fully visible, nothing in the mouth and no hands in frame. The portal is lenient on infant expression but the portrait is printed on the visa, so pick a clear, open-eyed frame.
