Camera tips before you shoot
  • Someone else holds the phone about 1.5 m away at your head height. No selfies at arm's length.
  • Daylight from a window in front of you; no flash, no overhead-only light.
  • Plain light wall, half a metre behind you, no shadow on it.
  • Shoulders in frame, space above the head; the tool crops.
  • Use the original file, not a screenshot or a messaging-app copy.

    How to use it

    1. Choose the document with the Change document control; the bands and background rule update.
    2. Upload the photo you already have, cropped to the document's proportions (a studio file, a booth download or your own crop).
    3. Read the list. Each rule shows the measured value, the allowed range and the fix.

If the photo is not cropped yet, use the document's tool page instead, which crops and checks together.

    Frequently asked questions

    What does the checker measure?

Head height from chin to crown, eye line, head width and crown margin where the document defines them, centring, tilt, head turn, eyes open, mouth closed, glasses, sharpness, resolution, background uniformity and colour, shadows, head coverings and red-eye.

    Does it crop my photo?

No. This page checks the photo as it is, assuming it is already cut to the document's proportions. Use the document's tool page to crop.

Why does it say the head is wrong when a studio made the photo?

Studios do get it wrong, especially for Canada's 31–36 mm and Japan's crown margin. The measurement is from the photo's own edges, so a photo with a white border will read small; crop the border first.

    Which document should I choose?

Use the Change document control to pick the authority. Each has its own bands and background rule.

    Is it free?

    Yes, always.

    Is anything uploaded?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser; see the privacy proof page for how to verify that.
