Camera tips before you shoot
  • Someone else holds the phone about 1.5 m away at your head height. No selfies at arm's length.
  • Daylight from a window in front of you; no flash, no overhead-only light.
  • Plain light wall, half a metre behind you, no shadow on it.
  • Shoulders in frame, space above the head; the tool crops.
  • Use the original file, not a screenshot or a messaging-app copy.

Can I take it myself? Yes

Yes. No authority sets rules for a profile or CV photo, so anything that looks like you, is sharp and is well framed will do. A photo someone else takes from a couple of metres, at eye level, in soft window light, looks far better than an arm's-length selfie. The tool here gives framing tips rather than pass or fail, and exports the sizes each use expects.

Why CV photo photos get rejected

      1. Face too small in a circular crop. Use the head-size control; aim for the head to fill about 60 per cent of the frame.
      2. Busy background competes with the face. Stand in front of a plain wall or use the background option.
      3. Harsh shadows. Face a window; avoid overhead light.
      4. Low resolution on high-DPI screens. Export the 800 px version and let the platform downscale.
      5. Cropped through the top of the head. Leave a little space above the hair; the tool's crown allowance does this.

      CV photo photo FAQ

Should I put a photo on my CV in Australia?

Usually not; most Australian recruiters prefer CVs without photos. Include one only if the job ad asks or the role is image-led.

What size is a CV photo?

There is no standard. A portrait 3:4 crop, printed around 30×40 mm, is common; the PNG here is 900×1200 px.

Is a passport photo OK for a CV?

It works, but a CV photo can be warmer: a natural smile and a softer background are fine.

      PNG or JPEG?

PNG for document templates (no compression artefacts); JPEG where a portal limits file size.

Can I use a cropped group photo?

Only if it is sharp and well lit. A dedicated photo against a plain wall is better.

Does this tool check anything official?

No. CV photos have no rules, so the tool gives framing tips only.
